Dumyat from Blairlogie

A rougher approach to the lovely summit of Dumyat than the more popular route, however it has good views and although steep and indistinct in places makes a rewarding climb.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Start from the small car park just east of Blairlogie on the A91 east of Stirling. There are a number of approaches to the summit of popular Dumyat from here. This route heads west at first and then climbs steeply with a short pathless section to join the main route from the Sherrifmuir road. Start by taking the path from the car park and climbing the stile in the woods. Turn left along the narrow track.

Stage 2

Just before the metal kissing gate and houses at Blairlogie head up a narrow path which climbs to the right. This dodges gorse bushes and runs along behind some houses before dipping to cross a stream and then climbing more open ground. Head through a thick section of gorse before the bracken takes over and the route continues to climb up the left side of a stream with steep sides.

Stage 3

Cross a side stream and look out for a point where the path crosses boggy ground and stream with a patch of scree just uphill. Although the path continues here, it deteriorates further on, becoming a narrow sheep path. The easiest route is to keep left here, aiming directly uphill heading for a lone tree. Keep to the left of the tree to reach a stile in a fence. From the stile aim on a vague path through the bracken almost directly uphill, aiming just slightly to the left, west.

Stage 4

After a fairly short climb the main path from the Sherrifmuir road is picked up. Turn right to follow this. The views to the right, over the Central Belt and River Forth to the distant Pentlands, is already superb, with the Wallace Monument very prominent in the foreground. The path descends very slightly to cross a tiny burn before the ascent resumes. Soon a smaller path may be seen heading off to the right; this is a short but worthwhile detour which leads to the site of an ancient hillfort on a lower top of Dumyat, Castle Law. Follow the path; the stonework of the fort is very tumbledown but the summit is marked by a small cairn. The ground to the south falls away very steeply and this is perhaps the best viewpoint on the hill for the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle. After enjoying the vista, return to the main path to continue the ascent.

Stage 5

As it approaches a fence it swings left to reach a stile. Cross this; the route from here follows the initially almost flat path to the right and not the steeper trods ahead, though after a short boggy stretch the main path begins to climb once more. Take time to enjoy the views looking back, with several Highland Bens on the horizon; from left to right they include Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi, Stuc a'Chroin, Ben Vorlich and distant Ben Lawers.

Stage 6

The summit is soon reached, marked by a prominent metal beacon, a large painted crest of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and the obligatory trig point. The views are, again, superb, with the hillfoot town of Alva prominent below the steep slopes and sweeping summits of the main Ochils range. The return route is by the same outward route, keeping a careful eye out for the point where you drop down through the bracken to the stile to pick up the lower path which is visible from the main path when looking down the small glen.
