Rumbling Bridge Gorge, near Crook of Devon

Rumbling Bridge gorge is a dramatic box canyon in seemingly otherwise gentle countryside. This short figure-of-eight walk gives exciting glimpses of its rock walls and waterfalls. NOTE: The bridge furthest downstream has been washed away - until it is replaced it it therefore only possible to go up and down one bank rather than completing the lower loop.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park in the layby on the A823 immediately south of the Rumbling Bridge itself, in the village of the same name. Begin the walk by heading along the path into the woods on this side of the river, with glimpses down into the steep-sided gorge on the left. There are also views back to the bridge, revealing an older, lower arch where the road would originally have had a steep dip to cross. When the path forks branch left down the steps to cross a footbridge perched high above the foaming burn.

Stage 2

On the far side turn right (you will recross the bridge and head left later as part of the figure-of-eight). Continuing upriver the gorge gradually becomes less dramatic until the burn is crossed on a more ordinary footbridge. The path continuing upstream links to the western edge of the Crook of Devon and can be used to start the walk from there. To continue the figure of eight, head back downstream on the south side, climbing some wooden steps and continuing until the footbridge crossed earlier is reached once more; cross it again and this time turn left. Steps down on the left lead to a viewing platform for the Devil's Mill where the water rushes through a particularly narrow passage.

Stage 3

Return to the path and keep left; another flight of steps leads down to a second platform, this time built out right across the gorge itself, adjacent to a cave. Back on the path, ignore branches off to the right and keep to the route nearest the gorge. There is a final detour to a viewing platform immediately below the road bridge. After enjoying this, head through a gate back onto the road and cross over the bridge to return to the start.
