Fassfern Forest walks no. 1

1. The car park is signed from the A830 and is just off the Fassfern loop road; there are plenty of picnic tables here and even a couple of stands for barbecues. A large notice board gives details of the three trails; this route combines the red and yellow trails. Begin by heading through the wicket gate at the far end of the field with the car park; there is a sign next to it reading “Ceum gu na Lochain”. The first red waymarker post is just past the gate. The path soon comes out onto a larger grassy track at a t-junction; turn right here. After a short distance there is an attractive lochan on the left, with several benches. The walk continues along the track.

2. The grass track continues to gently climb through the scattered deciduous woodland. Soon it passes through a gate; there are good views back to Loch Eil with Ben Nevis prominent down the valley. The gentle ascent continues towards the spruce and fir plantations. Further on the path descends a little and joins a larger forestry track. Turn left here (turning right follows the red route straight back to the car park). After about half a kilometre on this larger track, look out for another track going sharply off to the right downhill. Turn right down this track (there is no waymarker here).

3. Soon the track comes close to the river, and further on crosses it on a wooden bridge. The glen here is very attractive, with beech, birch and magnificent oak trees fringing the river which flows across a bed of rocky slabs. On the far side of the bridge, another track is joined at a t-junction. You can extend the walk here by turning left and following the loop of the 'blue' waymarked route; otherwise, turn right.

4. Follow the track which heads back down the glen through the fine woodlands, with the river always close at hand on the right. There are a couple of benches if you want to sit and enjoy the peace. Further on, the minor road is reached. Turn right over the old stone bridge to return to the car park.
