Pronunciation
and meaning
1. Turn off the A87(T) about three kilometres west of Invergarry, crossing White Bridge over the River Garry. Turn right once over the bridge to enter the car park (note that it is not possible to drive to this point via Mandally). The path begins at the northern end of the car park and follows the green waymarkers throughout - if a shorter walk is required, follow the black waymarkers. The Glen Garry native pinewoods are now being restored by the Forestry Commission, and the path passes through them as it follows the west bank of the River Garry upstream.
2. The River Garry flows through a gorge at first before becoming more sedate as you continue upriver. This is a salmon river, and if you are lucky you might see salmon leaping in the rockier sections. After about a kilometre you will see some of the Loch Garry hydro-electric scheme works ahead; a waymarker indicates where to turn left uphill, leaving the river bank. Follow a track for a short distance, looking out for a green waymarker on the right. Turn right here onto a path.
3. The well-made path continues uphill and crosses a little footbridge. Higher up the hill it becomes wider, and eventually meets a track at a t-junction; turn left here (again, green waymarkers). The track continues for some distance and curves round to the left, reaching a junction by a small quarry; turn left again here, and follow the track for about another kilometre. Look out for a green waymarker on the left, which indicates where to leave the track and follow a path downhill. Head straight across another track, and then cross yet another track towards the bottom of the hill.
4. The path now emerges beside the River Garry once more. Turn left along the river bank, passing some attractive rapids, to return to White Bridge and the car park.
