Princes Walk, Kinlochmoidart no. 1

1. Turn off the A861 just west of the Seven Men of Moidart memorial and go through the gate signed for St Finan's church. There is parking on the right just before you reach the church. Take the path at the back of the car park. The route is named after the time of the 1745 rebellion when Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at Kinlochmoidart House waiting for news of the support for the Jacobite cause. Follow the path through a short avenue of beech trees and turn right at the junction with the track coming from the church.

2. The path continues through the trees next to the fenced field in front of Kinlochmoidart House. The present house was built around 1882, the previous house having been laid to waste after the battle of Culloden. Follow the path though a metal gate and towards the house. Just before the lawn in front of the house keep left, following small yellow arrows on green backgrounds. The path now turns sharply uphill away from the house and up stone steps to the top of a small crag.

3. At the top of the steps carry straight on through the trees for a short distance. A few stone steps go down towards a farm gate. Turn right here and do not go through the gate. The track forks, take the left hand path, following the marker arrows. The path is indistinct here, keep looking for the arrows on trees. A zig zag takes you down to a small stream which is crossed to reach a stile. Once over the stile keep the fence on your right and head down towards the remains of the walled garden.

4. Cross a small wooden bridge to reach the wall and turn left to walk along next to the wall. At the corner turn right to continue skirting the walled garden. Cross the stile next to the farm gate to enter open ground. Don't head towards the cottages but keep to the left after the stile and follow the edge of the mown grass to cross to a signpost at the top end of the highest pond, passing a metal deer used for target practice.

5. At the signpost head right following the 'woodland walk' sign. The path then crosses the stream on the left on stepping stones and crosses a stile to climb uphill through beech trees. Descending the other side keep straight ahead and then head diagonally right to reach a small wooden bridge leading to a slightly overgrown path that takes you to the road. At the road turn right. At the junction with the entrance to Kinlochmoidart House turn sharp left along a path marked 'MacKenzie Walk'.

6. The path crosses open ground with good views up Glen Moidart. When the next road is reached turn right and then immediately left through a farm gate and along a fence until a gate leads to the river. At the river turn right and walk across the roots of the impressive pines. This is a very good spot to watch dippers and other birds. The path emerges at the old stone bridge next to a house. Turn right passed the red telephone box to join the A861. Turn right onto this road and follow it the short distance back to the starting point. From here both St Finan's Church and the memorial to the Seven Men of Moidart can be explored.
