Homecoming 2009

To celebrate Homecoming 09 Walkhighlands presents a special selection of walking routes.

This year is the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Scotland's favourite son.

Enjoy our series of self-guided walks especially devised for Homecoming 2009 and walk in the footsteps of your ancestors. Some of the walks visit historical settlements where high numbers of people emigrated either because of the Highland Clearances or economic difficulties, whilst others illustrate the lives of Scots who have had a great influence on the wider world. Click on the boot symbols on the map to access our Homecoming information for each walk. A link is also shown to open the full walk description, OS map and Gaelic pronunciation podcast on the main Walkhighlands site.

The walks have been selected to highlight some of the historical events which led to the mass movement of people in recent centuries. That these events occurred in some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery the Highlands has to offer means you can enjoy the present day while stepping into the past.
