Walk Description

Stage 1

At the pier is Am Laimhrig which houses the shop, excellent tea room, toilets and showers, and craft shop. The shop and craft shop sell a pack of postcards of the waymarked walks on Eigg. This walk takes in part of the Lodge Gardens walk which is marked with orange paint. From the pier take the road heading uphill, passing the road to Cleadale and then the re-erected standing stone which commemorates the community buy out, and continue into the woods.

Stage 2

After a long period of troublesome absentee landlords, the residents of Eigg bought the island in 1997 in partnership with the Highland Council and Scottish Wildlife Trust. Since then a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure a sustainable community can exist on Eigg and to provide accommodation and facilities for visitors. Soon the track leading to the lodge is reached, turn right here and pass the Community Hall on the left.

Stage 3

The track now enters the exotic gardens of the Lodge, a neo-colonial building built by a previous owner of the Island as a shooting lodge. The Lodge is not open to the public, but is undergoing restoration and carved Celtic stones can be seen by the doorway.

Stage 4

Pass the Lodge and continue uphill on the track. When the track forks keep on the lower, right hand track, marked with an orange dot. This eventually emerges on the main north-south road on Eigg. Turn left to head north, winding gently uphill. After passing a turning on the left with an old post box look out for a gate into the woods across the grass on the right hand side. This is almost opposite a green barn. Cross to the gate and go through it and pass a derelict wooden hut.

Stage 5

Follow the steep path down through the trees. At the bottom of the slope turn right following the narrow marked path through the trees. This path soon runs close to a stream and after a while reaches the edge of the woods. Go through the gate and follow the grassy path down to the shore.

Stage 6

Turn right to follow a clear path through bushes and then alongside the old harbour. At the road turn left to follow the water's edge past Shore Cottage and then back to the pier and the start of the walk.
