1. Start from the Ardgartan Visitor Centre, signed from the A83 just north of Ardgartan off the Rest and Be Thankful road, where there is information, ranger activities, parking and a picnic area, and a view of the south peak of The Cobbler. From the car park across the bridge follow the road signed for the Coillessan Events Car Park and the campsite. Continue along this road, following the blue marker posts, as it undulates through the pretty woodland.
2. Keep right at a junction and go straight on past the entrance to the campsite. Soon after, head downhill on a path to the left marked with a blue post. This path then follows the lochside between the water and the campsite.
3. Cross the access to the water from the campsite and pass an old boathouse. There are good views across Loch Long here and a good stopping place at the small beach. Keep following the path around the loch and then turn left at a marked junction and head away from the water. Cross a small bridge and follow the twisting path through woods before emerging onto a track - turn right here.
4. After a short distance turn left along a narrow footpath next to the river, this junction is just before you reach some houses on the right and is marked with a green footpath sign. Cross the wooden bridge and turn left to climb the bank on the other side.
5. At the top of the bank you reach the entrance drive to the Forest Holidays campsite at Ardgartan, there is a telephone box here. Turn immediately left to follow a path upstream above the Croe Water. The clear path, marked with red and blue marker posts, keeps left at a junction and follows the river closely. When the path merges with a bigger path turn left and then bear right at the next junction keeping on the same side of the river. Keep left to follow the path into the grassy picnic area at the Visitor Centre at the start of the walk.
