Loch Lomond Shores walk, Balloch no. 1

1. Start from the rear of the National Park Gateway Centre, opposite the main entrance to the Loch Lomond Shore shopping centre. The Visitor Centre is worth a visit and has a small area for children's activities, as well as good views towards Ben Lomond and the Maid of the Loch, an old paddle steamer. Follow the walkway around to the far side of the building and turn towards the loch and then take the second on the left to cross a small stream on a boardwalk path.

2. After crossing the bridge turn right and follow the boardwalk through the trees. The next turning right is a short detour to a slipway with a view over part of the loch. On the main path, an art installation of small mirrors is passed on both sides of the path. Follow the path as it bears to the left. The path now comes close to the loch and another artwork, this time a quartzite curving wall that divides the land from the water of the loch.

3. Continue on the main path around the edge of Loch Lomond. Follow the path past another beach to reach an open grassy glade. There is a path junction here; you can either short-cut the walk by turning left or continue on the path ahead passing the picnic tables. The path then swings left to head back towards a multi-coloured metal and plastic sculpture that contrasts strangely with the rural surroundings.

4. The path then plunges back into the trees and rejoins the outward route. Turn right here but ignore the turning back over the bridge to the visitor centre - keeping ahead. Another sculpture can be seen on the left - a black tower with blue and white squares of light. Continue ahead through the trees; the path reaches a bridge and then doubles back to return to the visitor centre. Exit by turning right back into the car parks.
