Meall an Fhudair is a rather featureless and sprawling Corbett, but its remote location and neglect by most hillwalkers do give it a great feeling of wildness and solitude.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park beside the A82, just over 1km north of Inverarnan opposite Glen Falloch farm. There is enough space for 2-3 cars but don't block the access road. The gate may be locked so climb over and head along the land rover track, which climbs steeply through the forest.

Stage 2

After crossing the bridge over the railway, the road takes a left and wends its way higher up the side of Troisgeach. Once you reach a pylon, the road splits. Take the right fork and head along this for 200m until you see a small cairn on a large rock. From here, there are good views towards the north end of Loch Lomond, with Ben Lomond towering above.

Stage 3

It is now time to head up the eastern flank of Troisgeach. The ascent is boggy in places and there appears to be no end to the climb, with little to inspire during this part of the climb. Once the ascent begins to level out, it is easy to see why the Gaelic translation of 'flat hill' applies. A small cairn pinpoints the summit of Troisgeach but the day's objective is still another 2 km away.

Stage 4

In poor conditions, it is worth taking a bearing due west but the flat terrain is boggy and littered with lochains. In clear conditions, Beinn Damhain can be viewed across the Lairig Arnan and the summit ridge of Meall an Fhudair appears quite distant. Once past the lochans, ascend a path on the final ridge up to a cairn shelter, where views across to Loch Sloy and Beinn Bhuidhe dominate. The summit is a very remote location and there is a great feeling of wilderness, even although one is only 6km from the day's starting point. To return, either re-trace one's steps or a more interesting and perhaps easier route is to descend in an ESE direction to the Lairig Arnan, where a track is reached and this takes you back to the car park.
