Meall an Fhudair is a sprawling and rather neglected Corbett, immediately north of the Arrochar Alps and lacking their fine outlines. It does, however, have a great feeling of wildness and solitude and some fine views.

Terrain

Track at first, then a boggy ascent up fairly featureless rough terrain.

Citylink buses run along the A82.

Walk Description

Stage 1

The walk starts from the A82, just over 1km north of Inverarnan opposite Glen Falloch farm. It isn't possible to park here, but there is enough space for 2-3 cars a short distance north on verges just beyond a bridge - take care not to block any entrances. Return to the farm and head up the track which leads off the road opposite it. The track - improved during hydro works - climbs steeply through the forest. After crossing the bridge over the railway, the road takes a left and wends its way higher across the slopes, with views towards Ben Lomond.

Stage 2

Ignore a minor track off right by a telegraph pole, continuing up the main track ahead. After climbing in a series of zig-zags, a fork is reached near a huge pylon. Take the right branch and head along until it begins to round the corner of the ridge to swing left. Leave the track here and head up the steep, rough and often boggy slope, soon reaching another of the huge pylons.

Stage 3

After a brief flattening the ascent continues up the ill-defined ridge of rock and wet grasses; it is straightforward enough to find a way avoiding any crags. Finally the slope eases again, and a short distance further a small cairn marks the summit of Troisgeach. The day's objective is still another 2 km away.

Stage 4

In poor conditions the terrain can be very confusing, with areas of bog, lochans and hummocky ground. Skirt the south side of Meall nan Caora and then continue down to a slight bealach.

Stage 5

Further on there begin to be traces of a path ascending the final ridge up to reach the summit cairn which has fine views of Loch Fyne and Beinn Bhuidhe. The summit is a very remote location and there is a great feeling of wilderness, even although one is only 6km from the day's starting point.

Stage 6

The quickest return is perhaps to retrace your steps. An alternative is to return to the bealach, then descend wet slopes WNW until an old path - still just visible - is picked up which contours the slope to the right, linking a series of intakes that feed the Loch Sloy hydropower scheme. This soon leads past a giant pipeline and joins a track coming up from the north. Continue east along the track, eventually rejoining the outward route. From here retrace your steps back to the start.
