Sallochy Forest Trails

DRYMEN, BALLOCH AND SOUTH LOCH LOMOND

There are three waymarked forestry walks from Sallochy, a beautiful picnic spot on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. This walk combines the two shorter ones, visiting an abandoned settlement, oakwoods, and good viewpoints over the loch.

1. Begin the walk from the beautifully situated car park at Sallochy, between Balmaha and Rowardennan. An information board gives details of three waymarked trails; this route links the green and blue routes. Leave the car park via the entrance and follow the marked path that begins on the opposite side of the road. At the first junction keep to the right, following the green, blue and red markers.

2. A short distance further is another junction. Again take the right hand fork, this time following the green marker. The path passes through some tall firs before reaching a more open area. This is Wester Sallochy, the site of an abandoned settlement - the ruins of the remaining houses are still clear to see. The trail now bends to the left through more conifers before emerging on a forest track.

3. Turn left along the track to reach a four-way junction. Bear right here to remain on the main track. The route climbs up towards a crag before reaching a wooden bench with a great view over Loch Lomond. Our route turns left here onto a steeply descending path, waymarked in blue. For a longer walk you could stay on the track following the red waymarkers which make a higher loop through recently felled forest plantations. Otherwise head down the grassy, bracken-fringed path.

4. Turn right, joining a grassy track, as the path reaches the woods. Soon the route turns left again, now keeping alongside a fence; this section passes through picturesque oakwoods. Cross a boardwalk before the path reaches a burn; turn right downstream here. Further on the path crosses a footbridge - the approach to this can be muddy after rain.

5. Soon the path rejoins the outward route; turn right to return downhill to soon reach the road and Sallochy car park.
