Silverbridge - Little Garve river walk, near Garve no. 1

1. Park at Silverbridge car park just off the A835 just north of Little Garve. From the car park cross the old bridge and then turn immediately right, following the path under the new road bridge and into the woodland. The old bridge forms part of an ancient drove route for cattle being taken down to markets in the south. Nearby was an important stopping point where cattle were often shoed. After passing under the road the path climbs through woods and reaches two houses at a track.

2. Turn right along the track and follow this for about half a kilometre. Then turn right downhill following a yellow marked route. A bench with a fine view of the river is soon reached. The path bears left from the bench and continues downhill towards the river. The path then follows the riverbank until reaching the lovely arched bridge at Little Garve. During the last section, the river boils and foams through an area of giant rocky slabs.

3. The bridge was built in 1752 as part of a military road from Contin to Poolewe constructed by Major Caulfield - successor to the famous General Wade. If you want to extend the walk at this point you can keep straight on and walk along the track for 2 km to a viewpoint over Loch Garve before returning to this point. Then cross the bridge and then turn immediately right into the woodland and follow the river bank north, where there are some fine views of the tumbling river.

4. Continue following the waymarked route back upstream; it keeps close to the river bank. The path is easy to follow and passes through beautiful woodland; all too soon you will return to Silverbridge, passing back under the main road and up steps back to the car park.
