There are three waymarked forest walks through Monaughty Forest from Torrieston, a short distance along the glen from Pluscarden Abbey; the route as described makes a longer outing by taking in most of all three.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Torrieston Car park is around 3km east of Pluscarden Abbey, the only medieval monastery in Britain that still has a working order of Benedictine Monks. There is a picnic area here, with three waymarked walks in red, blue and green - whilst across the road is an easier all-abilities trail. Begin by heading up the path past the picnic area. At a T-junction turn left; following the red waymarkers for the present.

Stage 2

The path is fairly level with some open views to the left; it slopes down almost to the road at one point, meeting a track. Turn right here, following the track as it climbs uphill across the slope. At the next junction, still following red markers, turn sharp right. The route now follows a pleasant path with some more extensive views before plunging into attractive native woodland, predominantly Scots pine. Turn left at a junction - now following the blue markers. The path climbs between the pines; turn right when it meets another path, and then left uphill once more near a bench. Higher up the path swings right to avoid denser commercial forestry ahead, but eventually turns left again and enters this darker environment.

Stage 3

Continue ahead at a junction, and, still following the blue markers, turn right at another along a track. The blue route goes off right at the next track junction (not well marked) but for the longer walk, continue ahead, now following green markers. Eventually a marker post indicates the place to leave the track, turning right onto a narrow path. Turn right again at a junction to turn for home. Soon there are good open views towards Brown Muir above the Glen of Rothes. Continue along the path, with clear views on the left, until it leads back to just above the car park.
