Winding Walks, near Fochabers no. 1

1. Start by taking the path at the far eastern side of the car park, on the right as you face the information board. From this path turn left immediately to head uphill on a wide path marked with red waymarkers. Soon there is a sign for Winding Paths to the right. Take this if you prefer a more rugged, smaller path that weaves in and out of the trees - it meets up again with red-waymarked route that is described here near the top end of Small Burn.

2. The path climbs steadily through pines with the chance of seeing a red squirrel. Keep straight ahead when a track leaves to the left at a bench. After the path levels off, look out for the red marker post just after a bend which indicates where to turn right. Bear right again when the path joins another path and continues to head uphill. Soon the path curves to the right and crosses the Small Burn.

3. If you took the winding trail go over the wooden bridge and past the picnic table to pick up the wide track on the far side. Otherwise continue to the junction with the track and turn right. Very soon turn left, now following the yellow markers, and then immediately right to follow a narrow path through the pines where lots of blaeberries can be found in the summer months.

4. When the path meets a track turn right and follow this to Peep's View where there is a lovely wooden gazebo and a view down to Fochabers. Keep on straight past the gazebo and go straight across at a track to take a winding path back down the far side of the burn. After a small flight of steps turn left and follow the path until it forks, take the right hand side down more steps and soon this emerges at a bigger path. Turn right here and soon you are back at the car park.
