Camas Tuath, near Bunessan

A short pleasant walk to the beautiful bay at Camas Tuath opposite an old pink granite quarry - optional extension to the sandy beach at Market Bay. A good family walk.

Terrain

A good path, almost level, wet ground mostly avoided by wooden walkways.

Public Transport

Bus to Fionnphort will stop on request at the end of the track.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is limited parking at the start of the track for this walk. Coming from Bunessan on the A849 it is the next track on the right after the entrance to Ardfenaig Farm. There is a shed and bin at the entrance to the track. The route is signed �Footpath to Camas�. Go through the gate on foot and continue ahead on the track soon picking up the boardwalk path on the left. The surrounding grazing land is popular with geese and lapwings depending on the season.

Stage 2

The track narrows to a path, crosses the open moorland and goes through a gate before curving to the right. Stay on the main path, ignoring any side paths. The wind turbine for the house at Camas can be seen on the rocky outcrop ahead. Soon the path heads downhill alongside a fine wall. Ignore the signed path for Market Bay and continue ahead to reach the houses.

Stage 3

These substantial buildings were used for the workers at the quarry opposite, please respect the privacy of the occupants and follow the path to the right when you reach the bay. The pink stone of the quarry and the jetty can be seen across the water. The stone from here was used to build the Skerryvore and Ardnamurchan lighthouses in the 1840s. Stone was brought down from the quarry to the pier on a tramway.

Stage 4

Return back up the outward path. Part way up the hill you can decide whether or not to detour to Market Bay following the signed path on the right. This is a rougher path and adds about 1 hour to the route and leads to a sandy beach. Otherwise retrace the outward route to return across the moor to the start.
