Glen Aros forest, near Salen

This is a very short but pleasant circular forestry walk, and is well waymarked. The main point of interest is the site of the old chapel and graveyard of Cill an Alein - an attractive spot with an outlook towards Ben More.

Accommodation

Walk Description

Stage 1

Turn off the A848 along the track signed by the Forestry Commission, passing their offices, to reach the car park and picnic area a short distance further on. The walk begins by continuing along the track on foot; it is waymarked in red and soon heads through a gate to enter the forestry plantations.

Stage 2

Soon the track passes a bench; after this look out for the 'Forest Walk' sign which indicates a path heading off uphill to the right. This climbs through the trees and passes just to the right of the old burial ground of Cill an Alein. It is worth a short detour to visit the old gravestones here, an eerie spot with a glimpse of the summit of Ben More.

Stage 3

Return to the path and continue uphill until it reaches a junction with a forest track. Turn right here and follow the track, passing through a gate and then with more open views ahead on the descent back to the car park.
