Glen Forsa loop, near Salen

Glen Forsa is a largely open glen in the very heart of Mull, dominated by the peak of Beinn Talaidh at its head. It gives a straightforward walk with an optional return variant by the river which can be wet. The glen is heavily used for cattle grazing.

Terrain

Good track for most of the route; some short very boggy stretches on riverside path in the plantation.

Walk Description

Stage 1

The turning for Glen Forsa is off the A849 on the section where the two carriageways separate a couple of kilometres east of Salen; a small sign reads 'Glen Forsa Estate only'. There is a parking area a short way along the lane near a house; beyond this point access up the glen is on foot or bicycle only. Start by heading through the gate and continuing along the track, with great views up the glen to the peak of Beinn Talaidh.

Stage 2

The track passes the white-washed Kilbeg (a self-catering cottage) and goes through another gate. Forestry plantations are left behind on the more open, middle-reaches of the glen. Glen Forsa is mostly used for cattle grazing - something for walkers with dogs to be particularly aware of.

Stage 3

After 3.5km the track comes close to the river once more; turn left through a gate onto a rougher track. This track leads back down the glen, keeping beside the river. Part way back a small side-stream is crossed and then a gate on the left leads straight back to the outward track - taking this option avoids the boggy ground in the forest.

Stage 4

Otherwise continue beside the river, and when the plantation is reached go through the gate and continue though the trees beside the water. There are several wet ditches to step across and the bracken can be high in the summer. Eventually a stony open area is reached; follow a track left from here to head back to the main Glen Forsa track by Kilbeg cottage. Turn right to retrace your steps from here back to the start.
