Kilvickeon Beach, near Bunessan

A great walk for families, this short track over farmland gives the chance to explore an old chapel and cemetery before heading for the spectacular sandy beach with its own tidal island. The 3km track to reach the car park is very rough.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Just east of Bunessan take the minor road from the A849 signed for Scoor. The public road soon ends, continue along the very rough and potholed track passing a house and a couple of caravans before climbing to the parking area where there is a sign for the walk. Start by following the arrow pointing along the track directly opposite the parking area. The walk crosses grazing land so any dogs should be kept under tight control. Soon detour to the right to visit Kilvickeon Chapel and cemetery. The atmospheric graveyard has a great setting with the loch in the background.

Stage 2

Return to the track and bear right along it soon passing through a gate and climbing gently. Soon the route starts to head downhill over short cropped grass. Head through a gate and bear left to aim for the beach.

Stage 3

Kilvickeon beach has a stunning setting, a curve of white sand with the tidal island of Garbh Eilean in the centre. There is plenty to explore with good rockpools on the edge of the island at low tide.

Stage 4

Before heading back it is possible to climb above the beach to the site of an ancient fort which makes a good viewpoint. Dun a Gheird is reached by heading back up the grassy slope from the beach and continuing uphill instead of going through the gate used earlier. At the top of the slope, which is boggy near the top, bear left up onto the highest ground from where there is a good view back and along the coast. To return to the start head back to the gate in the stone wall and retrace your steps along the track.
