Loch an Torr circuit

A mix of dense forestry plantations and open moorland, this walk makes a wide circuit around Loch an Torr with a short section on the road. The route follows landrover tracks throughout - signed as cycle paths - and offers better underfoot conditions than most on Mull.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is parking off the B8073 at NM452524, where a forest track leaves the road, marked with a large Forestry Commission Loch Torr sign. Begin by heading along the track, with good views of the loch down on the right. Pass through a gate; when the track forks keep ahead uphill, ignoring the downhill branch to the right. The track climbs up a couple of zig-zags.

Stage 2

Parts of the forest have been felled and soon a distant view opens up of the towering peaks on the Isle of Rum. After just over 4km from the start of the walk an oblique junction is reached; turn sharp right here, signed as a cycle path to Loch Frisa (the other direction heads to Dervaig). The narrower track soon leads down to a rickety wooden bridge over the Mingarry burn.

Stage 3

The track climbs through a felled area - go straight across the end of another track - and finally leaves the forestry plantations at a gate. Continue up to reach another track at a t-junction. Turn right here - signed as a cycle route for Loch Frisa north (the left branch eventually heads for Ardmore). The track gently climbs across the moorland.

Stage 4

Continue on the track, through two gates, and straight ahead when a track branches off to the right. Eventually there is a fork where the track meets what was once the old road; go straight ahead here through a gate (cycle sign). The modern road is met just beyond. Turn right and follow this back to the start by Loch an Torr.
