Less of a walk than somewhere to visit, the Macquarie Mausoleum is reached by a short, easy walk through pleasant farmland. The track is suitable for baby buggies, three gates to open on the route.

Gruline. Map and directions.
Gruline is on the B8035 road a few miles west of Salen. There is a signed layby on the east side of the road for the Mausoleum which is maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. There is no vehicular access (except for disabled) so park here and start the walk by heading along the signed track.
Go through the farm gate giving access to the house on the right. Please respect the privacy of residents and continue straight ahead to go through a second gate and past another house and through a third gate to follow the track. The Mausoleum is soon reached on the left hand side. It contains the remains of Major General Lachlan Macquarie and his immediate family. Major Macquarie was born on the neighbouring island of Ulva in 1762 and during a distinguished military career he was appointed Governor of New South Wales in Australia in 1809.
Lachlan Macquarie became known as the father of Australia, being the first person to use that term, and successfully restoring order after a period of rebellion. He died in 1824 in London and was buried on his native Mull together with his wife, Elizabeth, an infant daughter and older son. Return by the same outward route.
