Scallastle Forest Walk, near Craignure

A fairly easy walk through regenerating woodland with good views to the hills and across the water. A very steep short optional section leads up and down both sides of the Scallastle River past waterfalls.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Start from the Scallastle foresty commission car park, on the south side of the A849 just northwest of Craignure. If coming from the north it is not signed but is the next turning on the right after the Isle of Mull Hotel. A short way up the track is a car park and information board. Start the walk up the track through an area of felled forestry with a good mountain backdrop of Dun da Ghaoithe, the only Corbett (mountain over 2500ft) on Mull.

Stage 2

The track narrows and there are good views to the water on the right. The Forestry Commission has felled many of the conifers here and hopes native species will re-colonise the slopes, some birch trees can be seen amidst the stumps. After passing a picnic table the route follows alongside a section of remaining plantation and then crosses more open countryside.

Stage 3

Where a steep path leaves to the left continue straight ahead (this is the return route on the optional loop). Soon the path heads past a covered reservoir on the right and over a bridge over the Scallastle River. If you don't want to tackle the steep loop next to the river head back now, otherwise turn left to follow the tumbling water with good mountain views ahead.

Stage 4

The stony path soon reaches another bridge, cross this, the faint path continuing ahead leads up to the mountain. Climb the steep section of track on the far side of the river and soon the route bears left and then starts to head downhill with lovely views across the Sound of Mull ahead. At the bottom of the hill turn right to retrace the outward route back to the car park.
