Torosay Castle from Craignure

A great family walk through woodland with great views to reach Torosay Castle and Gardens and the chance to visit a pretty bay overlooking Duart Castle. Either return on the Mull steam railway (currently closed Spring 2011 but may re-open check with Craignure Tourist Info on 01680 812377), or return through Hedgehog wood. Distance given here is for the full circuit.

Walk Description

Stage 1

During the summer months the Mull Railway, a narrow gauge steam railway, used to run to Torosay Castle an could be used for either the outward or return journey for this walk. The castle is currently (summer 2011) for sale and the railway is closed but the operators hope to reopen - check on 01680 812377. Alternatively there is a lovely woodland path which can make the walk into a circuit and adds 1km and 40 minutes to the distances and times given here. Torosay Castle and Gardens are well worth a visit and also have a tearoom and children's play area. Start by parking in Craignure and walking south away from the ferry terminal to pass the Craignure Inn. If taking the railway for the outward journey follow the signs to the left to pass the campsite and reach the station. Otherwise continue up the road heading out of Craignure.

Stage 2

Keep an eye out for a track with a no admittance for vehicles sign next to a lovely lodge house. Follow this road through an avenue of trees and then with fields on the left side keep straight ahead where another track branches right. On a clear day there are excellent views to the mainland peaks across the water below.

Stage 3

Keep follow the track which heads through mature woodland with glimpses of Duart Castle across the bay. Eventually the station at Torosay can be seen below and the track emerges just below the entrance to the castle. The castle and gardens are well worth exploring.

Stage 4

It is also worth heading down the hill (follow the signs for Mull Railway) to take a track past the station and on through the trees to a house and then a jetty with a lovely view across to Duart Castle. This can be a stunning spot to watch the water and relax on a fine day. If not returning on the railway head back up to the castle and at the top of the path, cross the track, and go through an unmarked pedestrian gate into a field, near the car park, for the Hedgehog Wood route back to Craignure.

Stage 5

Cross the field diagonally to the left and go through the second gate into the wood. The path climbs through the wood and eventually reaches a track. Continue ahead on the track and after passing a water tank the route narrows to a path. Just before a house, head left to reach the main road. Turn right to follow the pavement downhill and back to Craignure.
