The alternative route starts from the Spey Dam, and initially follows a track up the east side of Glen Markie. Higher up the route is pathless as it climbs well east of the Piper's Burn to reach the plateau and round the coire to the summit. There is a bridge over the Markie Burn around 1km upstream from the confluence with the Piper's Burn.
