According to the Relative Hills of Britain news group on Yahoo, the Munro Society has completed 4 surveys this year and will be announcing a change to the Munro list in September.

Reportedly, the following Munros, all currently with a height of 915m, were measured: Ben Vane, Beinn Teallach and Sgurr nan Ceannaichean. The Corbett, Sgurr a’Choire-bheithn, currently measured as 913m, in Knoydart was also surveyed. In order for the Munro list to be changed the Ordnance Survey has to verify the new measurements.

Apparently the Munro Society plans to reveal all at a press conference to be held at 14.30pm on 10 September 2009 at the Kincaid House Hotel in Milton of Campsie announced. Watch this space for developments.

Surely the munro list is kept by the SMC not the Munro Society. It is the SMC who define the list

  2. Walk Highlands Says:

Hi there. As you say, the SMC define the list, and they have ultimate discretion over which summits are Munros and which are Tops, they have switched several peaks between the categories over the years.

However, the peaks being resurveyed are marginal as to whether or not they are over 3000 feet. This is a different matter as Munros and Corbetts are rigidly defined as being over or below 3000′. If the OS confirm the new results then the SMC don’t really have any option but to amend the list accordingly.

Now wasn’t the last amendment to the Munro list supposed to be the ‘Final’ one? Me thinks this is yet another ploy to sell/reprint more guide books! By the way all the lsited hills are cracking hills anyway, anyone who didn’t get up them, especially the one in Knoydart needs a good telling off!
