On the Skye Trail

The 128km Skye Trail is a challenging unofficial route through the island aimed at experienced walkers. It crosses the very best of the island and includes some of the UK’s finest landscapes.

The route follows much of the amazing Trotternish Ridge and later passes beneath the very shadow of the Cuillin, with the possibility of a detour to take in a Munro peak. Other sections follow remarkable but little visited coastal cliffs, take in steep trails above high drops, or pass through haunting deserted villages destroyed in the Highland Clearances. The route, which can easily be completed in a week, has been devised for those who prefer to get well away from the beaten track and have already gained experience of Scottish hillwalking. There is relatively easy access by public transport, and with advance planning, to accommodation at the end of each stage, but it could also be done as a backpack using a mixture of campsites and wild camping in the more remote areas.

The new guidebook, authored by Walkhighlands’ co-founders, Helen and Paul Webster, and published by Cicerone is available to pre-order from Amazon and good bookshops, or you can buy it now as an e-book. Details of the route, together with OS mapping and GPS downloads are also available from the Skye Trail website.
