Banvie burn and bridges, Blair Atholl no. 1

1. Park at the well-signed car park near the Old Bridge of Tilt. The walk is waymarked with black arrows and begins by leaving the car park via the entrance and turning left along the road. Soon it forks; take the right hand branch which slopes gently uphill. Soon it reaches a cross-roads of routes. Head straight across onto a track leading past a bungalow.

2. When the route forks keep following the black arrows (left track). Soon it heads into Banvie Woods - a good location to look out for red squirrels. Further on keep left again on the track that reaches an attractive stone bridge over the burn. Don't cross it (unless you want to shorten the walk) - but it is worth walking out onto it to look up and downstream. The tracks rejoin a short distance further on. At the next fork, go left once more to reach the upper Banvie bridge - a beautiful spot for a break.

3. Cross this bridge to begin the walk back down the far side of the burn. The track rises slightly and another track joins in from the right. Keep straight ahead (bearing left at the fork) to reach the first bridge once more. Further on a track off to the right is signed for 'The Whim'. This is a stone-built folly of three gothic arches with a view to Blair Atholl castle - well worth the short detour. After enjoying it, return to the main track and continue down the glen.

4. The track continues, soon passing to the left of a house and then down a beautiful avenue of trees to reach the tarmac road. Turn left along this, passing under a stone footbridge, to reach the picturesque hamlet of Old Blair. The road and route go left in the hamlet, but the ruined St Bride's Church on the right is worth a short detour.

5. Just beyond Old Blair the cross-roads from earlier on the walk is reached once more. Turn right here to return down the road to the start of the walk.
