Taybank circular, Errol

This straightforward circular walk leads from Errol down to a wooded bank at the edge of the Tay, at first above reed beds and later above the watery tidal flats. It gives an interesting perspective on the river and is a good walk for birdlife. Errol is a large village set on the Carse of Gowrie, the flat lands on the north side of the Tay, renowned for its fertile soils.

Good tracks and paths; slightly muddy in places on second part of Tay Bank.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is a car park in Errol near the recycling bins, next door to the school. Facing the road from the car park, turn left along the pavement on the far side. As the pavement ends next to a lamppost, turn right onto a footpath, soon heading through a gate and continuing to New Farm with its tall grain silo.

Stage 2

At the farm turn left (signed 'Errol circular paths'), and then right onto the track past the old chicken sheds. The track follows a line of tall trees as it crosses the agricultural land. Turn left at the next junction (signed 'Tay bank path'), and then right after just over another 500m onto a footpath with a red waymarker. The path runs along a band of trees, with open farmland on the right and a steep bank down to the left that falls to the reed beds of the Tay estuary.

Stage 3

The path winds through the trees, whilst the reed beds to the left are a haven for wild fowl. As Tay Lodge is approached ensure dogs are on leads as the lodge has free range chickens. The path veers to the right to meet the entrance track. A right turn here leads straight back to Errol, but to continue the walk turn left and then immediately right again onto a path which continues through the band of trees as before. The reed beds are soon replaced by wetland and marshes down to the left, before the path finally emerges from the trees at Port Allen.

Stage 4

Turn right here up the grassy path that leads between the two grand old houses. This becomes a minor road; after 250m turn right onto a track between fields. This leads to some cottages and a junction with a larger track; now turn left and follow the larger track up to the main road.

Stage 5

Cross the road and turn right along the pavement on the far side. The high wall bounds the gardens of Errol Park, a Renaissance mansion. Follow the road as it bends left into Errol, and then turn right at the junction to continue into the centre of the village. There is a fascinating blend of architectural styles; look out for the Freemason's Lodge, and for the unicorn atop the Mercat Cross. Continue through the village to return to the school and the start of the walk.
