Kenmore Hill

 LOCH TAY AND GLEN LYON

An excellent waymarked circuit on and around Kenmore Hill. The hill has been planted with Scots pines and other native trees and offers superb views of Loch Tay and the mountains beyond.

1. The walk starts from the small car park which is signed for 'Woodland walks' off the Kenmore - Amulree road. There is an information board here giving details both of this walk (waymarked in red) as well as two shorter trails. Begin the walk along the trail that starts to the left of the board. Almost immediately it forks; for the red route, head up the path to the right. It is well waymarked though there is a lack of the red waymarkers until the other routes have been left; the path winds uphill through the young trees with great views back to Strath Tay and the massive Taymouth Castle.

2. Immediately after crossing a small stream the path forks; turn right. The path crosses a duckboard and then approaches a stile. Don't cross the stile but keep left, heading towards a gate but also passing this on the left. The waymarkers are now marked in red only; continue uphill through an area with several grand old Scots pines.

3. Eventually the path reaches a massive cairn near the summit of Kenmore Hill. The true highest point is actually away from the trail over to the left, but this cairn is by far the best viewpoint. Below almost half the length of Loch Tay can be seen, backed by the towering summits of the Ben Lawers range. Further to the right is the Carn Mairg group of mountains and next to them - almost directly above Kenmore and the foot of the loch - is the distinctive cone of Schiehallion - much steeper on its left side than its right when seen from this angle.

4. From the cairn the path continues, soon crossing a stile over a deer fence. The path turns left alongside the fence before bending to the right and descending through new and densely planted forest.

5. Soon the path meets a lovely green track known as the Queen's Drive. Turn right along this, enjoying great views over the foot of Loch Tay and Kenmore below. Eventually the track reaches a large gate and then the minor road just beyond. Turn right along the road and follow it uphill for about half a kilometre to reach the entrance to the car park. Turn right up the lane here to return to the start.
