Pronunciation
and meaning
1. There are three car parks all with trails into the Kerrowmore Woods on the road descending from Ben Lawers Visitor Centre to Glen Lyon. It is possible to link the car parks using the walks to make several circular routes. This route begins at the lowest car park, situated in a small quarry opposite a notice board about half a kilometre south of the Bridge of Balgie. Begin the walk by walking a short distance down the road towards Glen Lyon. Just after a track goes off to the left and near the beautiful river, turn right onto an initially unmarked path.
2. The path heads through a gap in an old stone wall and then slopes gently uphill to the right of a fence; there are duck-boards and wooden steps in places. Pass a bench next to two little pools and head up to pass over a rustic wooden bridge. Further on the path turns clearly uphill on the far bank of a burn. The climb is fairly steep at first with wooden steps to ease the way and a bench for a rest part way up near an attractive waterfall.
3. Higher up the gradient eases and a series of forest lochans set in a bog are reached next to a picnic table. The path crosses this section on a wooden boardwalk; not far beyond a forest track is reached. Turn right along this (signed for the Upper Car park). Continue along this for about half a kilometre – here a wooden walkway indicates the start of a path heading off to the right (signed Middle Car park) – turn off onto this.
4. The path passes through the forest to reach an open heathery ridge. Ascend this for a fine view up the glen to the Munro of Stuchd an Lochain. A sign indicates a diversion to a viewpoint to the right – this gives a better view down Glen Lyon, guarded by the Carn Mairg range of mountains. Return along the ridge the other way; the path on this section is quite faint and can be lost amid a maze of terraces. Eventually you should see a stream over to the left and the path keeps parallel to this as it heads down to reach the road.
5. Turn right down the road – alongside a lovely stream at first – and descend until it returns to the start of the walk.
