Glen Tilt viewpoint, Blair Atholl no. 1

1. Park at the well-signed car park near the Old Bridge of Tilt. The walk is waymarked with blue arrows and begins by leaving the car park via the entrance and turning left along the road. Soon it forks; take the right hand branch which slopes gently uphill. Soon it reaches a cross-roads of routes. Turn right up the tarmac lane leading just to the left of a beautiful pair of estate cottages.

2. Just past the cottages keep straight ahead when another lane branches off to the right. The route becomes a track as it passes above the castellated farmhouse of Bailanloan to give fine views down the glen. The track is lined with some fine trees and passes Blairuachdar as it gradually climbs uphill. Soon the track enters the woods – ignore a branch coming in from the left. When the route forks, keep on the lower right hand track.

3. Further on the blue waymarkers indicate a sharp right hand turn onto a fainter track heading downhill. Before going this way, however, continue another the main track for about three hundred metres for a stunning view up Glen Tilt from the entrance to the rifle range. Return back to the junction and take the downhill track through fine woodland.

4. Below a steep section the track crosses a small bridge and then descends more gently through birchwoods before reaching the main track up Glen Tilt. Turn right along this track. After a kilometre and a half a waymarker indicates an optional loop off to the left to view the Fender falls. The falls are often obscured by foilage but the loop is worthwhile for its woodland scenery and it soon returns to the main track.

5. Further on another path goes off to the left. You can follow the main track all the way back to the road and car park but a better option is to turn left here onto the path. This crosses a stone bridge over the road near the Old Bridge of Tilt to return to the start.
