Pronunciation
and meaning
1. Take the minor road off the Glendale B884 signed for Uiginish. There is parking on the left of the road shortly before the road ends at Uiginish farm. Start the walk by following the grassy track past the grand white farmhouse; the track bears left slightly to reach the corner of a fence.
2. Pass through the left hand of the two gates. Continue in roughly the same direction as previously (now pathless), heading for a square-topped hill ahead. Contour the left slopes of this hill until the lighthouse is revealed at Uiginish Point. Head to this lighthouse. There are superb views from here, from Dunvegan Castle well seen over to the right, and out across a wide expanse of the sea. Seals can often be seen swimming in this area.
3. Turn left and follow the coast to a small bay. The continuation along the coast is initially blocked by a low cliff, and it is necessary to head inland a few hundred metres to round the end of this cliff and ascend back to the coast beyond. Continue pleasantly along the top of the low coastal cliffs to the next bay at Ob Dubh.
4. Turn left inland here beside a fence; soon you will find yourself walking along a track. After half a kilometre, it is worth detouring to the top of the rocky hillock on the left. On the summit are the crumbling remains of Dun Totaig, a broch; the outline of the walls and entrance can easily be seen.
5. Return to the track. It bends round to the left and passes through two gates before returning to Uiginish Farm round the back of two barns.
