 DURNESS AND NORTH SUTHERLAND

1. There is parking by the war memorial on the right from the road into Kinlochbervie. There is a view across the loch from here, though the small quarry at the far end detracts from any scenic qualities. Begin the walk by heading back along the road away from the harbour before turning left into Manse Road. Keep right at the fork; the left branch leads to the large new school building.

2. The road ends at the church. Go through the gate into the churchyard and pass to the right of the building; leave through another gate at the far right corner. This gives access to a grassy track that slopes downhill to the left, soon passing through another gate into open croft land. Loch Innis na Ba Buidhe - locally known simply as Loch Innes - is on the left.

3. The path crosses an improvised footbridge and then a second bridge. Head to the left of the sheep pens and then bear right, soon going through another gate. The track now continues close to the shore, with good views back towards Kinlochbervie. Follow the track round the head of the loch; it eventually leads up to the Oldshoremore road.

4. Turn left along the road, taking care with any traffic. There are views over Loch Clash to the right. Pass the Kinlochbervie Hotel and eventually meet the main road at a T-junction, overlooking Kinlochbervie harbour. Though a tiny place, Kinlochbervie is one of the major fishing ports in Scotland by the weight landed. Boats based on the east coast land their catch here at the huge depot built in the 1980s, before being transported away in lorries. Turn left along the pavement to return, with a glimpse of distant Arkle, to the war memorial at the start.
