Applecross House walk no. 1

1. Park at the picnic area beside the central part of Applecross beach. The walk begins by following thee road north for a short distance to the bridge over the river. Don't cross the road bridge, but turn right onto the footpath which follows the near side of the river upstream – signposted for 'Beach and River walks'.

2. The path continues through delightful woodland, keeping close to the river. Ignore the branch off to the right which heads to Applecross house, instead continuing alongside the river until you reach a bridge and a track. Don't cross the bridge, instead cross straight over the track onto a smaller track -signposted for 'Roes Walk'. The track soon becomes a path and curves away from the main river, climbing uphill close to a smaller stream.

3. After about a kilometre, look out for a path turning off sharp right (doubling back on yourself). Take this turning; the path tunnels through the luxuriant rhododendrons. Beyond, the path passes a little wooden lookout tower – worth ascending for the view across to the Skye Cuillin.

4. After passing more rhododendrons, the path emerges at a 'T' junction on a track; turn right. Continue ahead to a series of estate buildings, ignoring the cottage drive on the left but turning left a short distance beyond onto a well-walked path. This heads through a gate and has views over to the right of both Applecross House and its walled garden, with cottages built along it. Continue along the main path, ignoring turnings on the left, eventually passing through a gate. The path leads down slightly and crosses a bridge.

5. There is a clearer view of Applecross house to the right. Continue on the path, passing through two further gates to a junction with a track; turn right here. This track heads down through delightful woodland to join with the main drive to Applecross House. Turn left. Head down to the main road itself and turn right alongside the beach to return to the start.
