Ullapool and Loch Achall no. 1

1. The description begins from the large free car park next to Somerfield supermarket in the centre of Ullapool. From here walk east along Market Street to join the A835 opposite the High School. Turn left and walk along the main road for 5 minutes passing Highland Stoneware on your right. Turn right just after the Broom Bar into Broom Court which is signed for Ullapool Hill Paths. Straight ahead go through the wooden gate and follow the path as it starts climbing to the right.

2. Ignore a path off to the right and continue on the main path as it climbs and turns to the left reaching a bench with good views over Ullapool. Follow the path behind the bench marked with a red and white marker post. The path winds through the heather onto more open moorland. Soon a metal viewpoint is reached showing the surrounding hills and lochs.

3. It is worth detouring to climb up to the viewpoint at Meall Mor. Continue on the clear path as it undulates and climbs the open countryside. On a fine day there are great views down Loch Broom. Soon the path steepens to reach the rocky outcrop of Meall Mor at 270 metres. From here Loch Achall can be seen to the north. Return down the path until you reach a bench and a clear path heading north east marked with a yellow marker post. Take this right turn at the bench and follow the sometimes muddy path.

4. The path crosses heathery moorland and widens then passes through a gate. Keep on the track as it heads towards Loch Achall visible ahead. The path descends towards woodland and passes through another gate. Immediately after the gate turn left following white arrows. Head downhill for a short while until the path emerges at a track. Turn left until the tarmac road is reached. Here turn right and continue on the road, crossing the bridge at the spectacular Eas Dubh waterfall. Keep on the road until you reach the outflow of Loch Achall.

5. The road continues along Loch Achall which is a pleasant optional extension to the walk. When the Loch is reached turn right along the rough track next to the Ullapool River. Soon the remains of the original bridge is reached. A path continues on the north river bank which emerges back onto the road a little distance east of the bridge.

6. Turn left along the road crossing back over the river. Continue on the road as it heads through pleasant woodland before passing the disused section of Ullapool limestone quarry. Later the road skirts round the working part of the quarry where care should be taken for quarry traffic. The road continues downhill. Immediately before the cattle grid turn left onto a signed path and climb gently uphill following green markers. Where the path forks take the right fork and head slightly downhill. This path soon returns to the first bench above Ullapool on the outward path. Continue straight passed the bench and return to Ullapool on the outward path.
