Dun Ardtreck and Lighthouse - even the sheep are a sight...

Route: Fiskavaig coast, from Talisker

Date walked: 27/05/2024

Time taken: 1 hour

Distance: 3km

Ascent: 50m

The weather forecast made it clear that the big hills were out of question. Hence that we decided to head out to Miningish and to give this little loop a try ... in between the rain showers...

We started from Ardtreck after finding a little parking spot. There are lots of no parking signs around there however and it is best indeed to start from Talisker.

The walk starts on a farmroad and a meadow before turning into open farmland. With a few weeks of rather dry weather the boggy sections that followed were easy enough to do. I would assume though that this turns into a proper bog feast in the wrong weather.

If this turns you off - do give it a try though. The peninsula comes with lots of little outcrops that open up unexpected and rather wild views over the stunning surrounds - Cuillins, MacLeods Tables, the high cliffs of the coast... sweeping views over a very pretty part of Skye.

We did try and follow the trail down to the lighthouse first but then decided to follow the coastline over and back to Dun Ardtreck. It was a good decision as while having to go through a short stretch with bracken first, the rest of the walk is on short grass either below the cliffs or on top of them. Easy walking compared to the rather boggy trail over the top.

The Hebridean sheep were rather skittish - lovely to see though as they are not quite as frequent an encounter as one would expect on the Hebrides.

The views along the coast and from the Dun are stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed taking time over this little loop. Thoroughly recommended if you are in the area.
