Re: GPS Device advice

You could get a phone powerbank and charge on the go. A 10.000 mAh powerbank will charge your phone 2 to 3 times (depending on the size of your phone's battery, of course). Certainly cheaper than a dedicated GPS device.

Re: Ring of Steal or Ben Nevis

If anyone has this question in the future, I'd recommend going up Sgurr an lubhair from the WHW (path is a little boggy, but not too bad), doing the Devil's ridge to Sgurr a' Mhaim and dropping to Glen Nevis and joining up with the WHW to Fort William. You basically do the best part of Ring of Steal...

Re: WHW June 2017 - Logistics Questions

The shop by the Oak Tree Inn (I think it's their shop but not 100%) in Balhama was well stocked with all sorts of gear. I'd ring the Inn and ask, if they can check.

Re: What new boots...?

I also have Hanwag boots (Tatra GTX). Really comfy, only ones I could find with a wide last option. Rockplate broke in one shoe after 300ish km of Alpine hiking. The shop sent them in for repair with Hanwag and they've replaced both soles for free. Great experience. Pretty sure the failure was my fa...

Re: Ben Lomond (from Rowardennan to Inversnaid)

Glad to report that it was a beautiful day today so we did the path. Down from the bend in Ptarmigan way it was really boggy all the way. There's also a fence quite soon after you leave the path, but it's easy to climb over (I think it's for reforestation). You have to climb it again below Cruinn a'...

Re: Women's walking shoes

if your pack is light, you don't really need ankle support. ankle support is only needed when you are carrying heavy loads. just using trail runners is fine - it actually makes you more nimble and more aware of the terrain. i'm not familiar with la scarpa models (although I know they are good), but ...

Re: Ben Lomond (from Rowardennan to Inversnaid)

We are very experienced, live near the Alps, so we hike a lot. We'll only attempt it, if the weather is decent, don't worry. The forecast seems quite promising for Tuesday, although snow is forecast on Monday evening/night. We'll have trekking poles. Looking at the map, the NE slope is indeed very s...

Re: West Highland Way Failed Attempt

Checkout r/Ultralight on Reddit, you can get great advice on starting to carry a lighter load!

Sorry to hear you had to drop out due to blisters. I really recommend putting Leukotape on the problematic areas before you start your day, it works really great for me.

Ben Lomond (from Rowardennan to Inversnaid)

My mom and I will be doing the West Highland Way next week and we've been thinking of going up Ben Lomond from Rowardennan down to Inversnaid (as the regular West Highland Way would takes us). It seems like the path from Rowardennan should be easy to navigate, but I'm worried about the trek down to ...
