Re: Sparrowhawks and Long Eared Owl

Absolutely wonderful! I've never seen a long eared owl, but we had a male sparrowhawk take a wood pigeon just outside our conservatory. Amazing that it can easily deal with a bird at least 3 times its own weight! Definitely, the size of the talons on the owl would give me cause for concern at letti...

Sparrowhawks and Long Eared Owl

Visitors to my garden within the last couple of weeks, both utilising the same spot for their meals...blackbirds on the menu on both occasions

Re: Glen fiddich estate is a disgrace to Scotland

You might wish to investigate a bit further, not a foreign owner: Wildlife crime https://raptorpersecutionscotland.wordpress.com/2010/03/07/gamekeeper-convicted-for-dead-peregrine-on-glenfiddich-and-cabrach-estate/ https://www.thefreelibrary.com/MILLIONAIRE+LAIRD+DESTROYS+HOMES%3B+Council+act+to+sa...

Re: Glencoe hillwalkers fined for travel violation.

Spiderwebb, I get your point and I understand why you would feel uncomfortable travelling to the northern corries access point which would for a while take you well over the 5 miles before you got closer to your parking spot. I'm pretty sure most coppers would take a dim view of that even if it is ...

Re: Glencoe hillwalkers fined for travel violation.

Living on the Moray Coast I could legitimately walk the Northern part of the Cairngorms, and even summit Ben Macdui, although the road access would take me outside Moray LA. There is no specified distance on how far one can travel to a start point, only that the start point should be within 5 miles...

Re: Glencoe hillwalkers fined for travel violation.

I think the area that may be open to interpretation, is that yes, you are allowed to travel for exercise that starts and finishes in the same place and which can be up to 5 miles from your Local Authority Boundary. With the exception of the Central belt, the Local Authority areas are huge, hence som...

Re: Glencoe hillwalkers fined for travel violation.

The key issue is you do not know whether you have the virus or not and travel outside of your own home, let alone area, is potentially helping the spread. You can argue over distances all you like, the fact that you might be on the edge of your local authority or the fact that you’re going for a wal...

Re: A good death is its own reward.

I can empathise with those feelings in so far as dying doing something you love. Having said that and not knowing your circumstances the concept of having not yet found a suitable hill suggest something deeper. Without wishing to upset anyone here, suggesting there is something to live for, I can fu...

Re: Something to be ashamed of?

Agree with the last post :D Like so many things its down to personal opinion. For me it certainly isn't simply a question of height, the mountains in Assynt being the perfect example of how stunning a landscape can be without the height. Whether you think the Scottish mountains are the best in the w...

Re: Knoydart 3 , is there an easy way ?

Better still canoe/kayak in from Kinlochourn to Barrisdale :D That sounds a bit easy - could you no swim it?  Swim, SWIM   I swam under the Spey Bridge at Fochabers, it was a bold expedition planning to paddle to Spey Bay. In the event, I think I stayed upright for approximate...
