Re: Hiking boots too heavy??

I find boots too heavy. Period. I've been wearing approach shoes for all but the most wintery of walks for a couple of decades now, and wouldn't go back to boots. This includes 40 - 60km expeditions. I see that quite a few other folk also wear trainers or approach shoes. Mind me asking what type of...

Re: Fell Running

Any advice on shoe's would be appreciated. I keep seeing Inno-v8 shoes advertised when looking. On the subject of fell running I saw this video, which was massively impressive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vetYYCiUfow Cracking video with amazing weather and views, videoing it looked a bit dodgy ...

Re: Fell Running

Strange how this has cropped up as I have been looking into this lately. My first interest in it was from a gear point of view being all lightweight and minimal for the summer months. But have now been looking at a couple of events later in the year one of which is the pentlands skyline race which w...

Re: viewranger

Hi Sonic It is very user friendly, and as electricfly says it is so easy to download the GPX from WH and import them into Viewranger online and then sync them to your phone as routes to follow. I can't remember if I tried any others, but the app and their support is so good I doubt I ever will. Rem...

Re: viewranger

Hi folks After commenting on another thread about gps namely "buying a gps" I have downloaded viewranger with a view to trying it this weekend on the hills. Got a question though how do you purchase maps can you do it through the app or do you need to open a viewranger account and how do ...

Re: viewranger

You can increase your battery life significantly by enabling 'aeroplane mode' (or 'flight mode' or whatever your phone calls it). For long days with mine I take a PowerMonkey and top the battery up with that. Another great tip I had done Beinn Dorain and Beinn an dothaidh yesterday and used this an...

Re: viewranger

Cheers Michael and tenohfive Have checked these out as well as they are much more affordable than the power monkey. Had considered carrying a second battery but have now dropped that idea as it means opening up the phone in what could be quite bad weather and of course switching it off in the middle...

Re: viewranger

Before you go and purchase any maps, try it out using the free "open cycle map" in the map menu. I find that the best way to operate with Viewranger is to save GPX route files from walkhighlands to a folder on your pc. Set up a Viewranger account (free) using your pc, and follow the instr...

Re: viewranger

The most flexible option is to buy map credit, then you can download maps by the tile, so you only get the bits you need and not a load of stuff you don't. To do that, just to to Options and Get Tiles. Thanks Michael Have found that now as well, looking forward to trying it out on the hill tomorrow

Re: buying GPS Unit

If that's all you want it for, and you've got an Android smartphone, use ViewRanger. (Not on an iPhone as it kills the battery but Android's fine). I use it on all my walks. Carry a PowerMonkey as well for recharging and it'll run all day with no worries. Significantly cheaper than a dedicated unit...
