Loch Quoich Dam Parking

Hoping to head up this weekend to do Gairich by the standard route. Have a recollection of work going on around the dam area and also some problems with a ranger looking for parking charges (although possibly just for overnighting). Anyone been up there recently and can advise on current ease of par...

Re: Food suggestions

Based on a recommendation on here I've been using Huel Hot and Savoury dried food as a base for main meals and have found it very good. I usually add some couscous and chorizo to pad it out but can be eaten as is. It's probably half the price of standard camping meals and has the advantage that you ...

Re: Afternoon Parking on Weekends

There is probably some complex correlation between season/daylight, distance from civilisation and length of the most popular route(s). Was at the Lednock Chonzie car park about 9.30am last March and had to park a good distance away but at 5pm there was just my car and one other. On Saturday I got t...

Re: Canisp from Glencanisp

Seem to remember a decent FWD track for a km or two after the Suilven turn-off before a more rough/boggy track up to the ridge as it turns more NE. No recollection if the ridge had a path but it is mostly straightforward and then a bit bouldery at the top. In another location Canisp would be a decen...

Re: Katadyn BeFree water filter

An excellent bit of kit. Difficult to tell how well it filters as I've never been sick before or after using it. There is definitely a taste to it, slightly chemically but it is barely noticeable and much less than most UK tap water (although in Glasgow we're a bit spoiled with good Trossachs water ...

Re: Boots

Sock requirements also need to be considered. As someone who tries to hillwalk through the year I would need, as a minimum, a thin-sock and thick-sock option. However, not being someone averse to a bit of gear-monstering, I have four options . Non-GTX trail runners (thin-sock), GTX lightweight...

Re: Sail Mhor to Eighe Main Ridge

Thanks folks. Very useful info for (hopefully) future reference.

Looks like my impression from the top was about right. Grade 2 if taken directly but that it was such a jumbled mess of steps and slabs there was probably a meandering Grade 1 if you looked carefully enough.

Sail Mhor to Eighe Main Ridge

I did the standard route on Beinn Eighe from Glen Torridon last week. Took a detour over Coinneach Mhor to have a look at the scramble to Sail Mhor. The relatively straightforward initial section petered out to either a dodgy looking loose gulley or an airy rockstep of several metres. I assumed the ...

Re: Hiking the Highlands with a wheelie / hiking trailer?

Two thought spring to mind. One would be use baggage transfer services, start from Glasgow and do the West Highland Way and Great Glen Ways. The other would be to search for offroad gravel cycling routes rather than walking routes as most predominantly walking routes in Scotland would be a nightmare...

Re: Baby and pram...any suggestions?

Braemar/Deeside would also be a good base. Plenty of very good paths from Linn of Dee and Invercauld Bridge that can be as low or high level as you like.

Re: Books

It's been a while, but if you are looking for something funny, 'A Walk in the Wilds' by Bill Bryson is recommended. On recent trips I've read 'Along the Divide' and 'Out There' by Chris Townsend, and 'Farthest Shore' by Alex Roddie, all of which are excellent. Hamish Brown's 'Hamish's Mountain Walk'...

Re: Sunrise Hikes

Any advice for a bagging a Munro in the dark of the night? Don't go in June . At this time of year there is only probably an hour or two you couldn't follow the relatively clear path up. The area around Coileitir would be the hardest bit to navigate. Pick a decent night, hike up about 10ish a...

Re: Inov8 Roclite Pro G 400 boots

I've had a pair for a couple of months so not a tested to destruction review. Probably about 20 hours on the hills in them and they still look like new so no obvious wear issues emerging. Very light and comfortable from the box. Sole is very sturdy and a lot grippier than the Salomon Ultra Mid's the...

Re: Need advice for Cairngorms 4000 with Carn a Mhaim and DP

The descent from Macdui down Coire Clach nan Taillear is steep and rough. I've not descended down the nose of a'Mhaim but the path that runs SE off the top is fine so I would be tempted to stay on that until past the rockier bits further up, then traverse. I personally hate out and backs so I don't ...
