Re: Compass required?

I always take a compass with me whenever I'm out on the hills - although it largely remains un-used in good clear weather its good to know I have it if and when things close in. having said that, its no use at all if you don't know how to use it and use it in conjunction with a map. On the occasions...

Re: Frithe, Basteir and Sgurr nan Gillean

Great report and like many I'm sure, reading it makes me yearn to be back there  Its easy to see from your photos why the ridge gets its iconic name of the British Alps!

Really enjoyed reading your report

Polcats

Hi folks, I've read that enticing Polcats into the garden around the West Coast can be efective if lured in by sweet sticky jam and pea-nut butter - has anyone heard this too or am I dreaming that I've read about it  I'm really looking forwards to engaging my kids into spotting wildlife on ou...

Re: Walkers' lives put at risk by 999 reliance on satnavs

Its amazing that the 999 service cannot handle grid references. having said that though, if you are calling using amodern phone (Most have passive GPS) then your position is transmitted by default through the 999 network. Its also worth noting that the breed of 'smart phones' now transmit their loca...

Re: High Raise, lakes

The furthest so far is 40 miles on the Lyke Wake Walk but I found it pretty boring I've done quite a few long distance walks too, and like you I found the Lyke Wake a boarding slog. Dont get me wrong I love the N. Y. moors (I live on the boarder of them so should love em) but despite my love of the...

Unknown bird

My 3 year old son and me have made a bird table for the garden and I'm pleased to say that we have quite a few visitors already - the picture I've posted here is of a shy ground feeder but I'm not sure what it is? It sits on the fence for ages before jumping down for bread and a snippet of apple, it...
