Re: WHW wildcamping Milngavie

I live in Milngavie. The area very close to Milngavie is busy with dog walkers until close to dusk. There are spots to pitch a tent though. Pitching late you would be OK. The two yellow dots on this map are good possibilities. The one away from the river is a quieter spot. In fsct if you are worried...

Re: First highlands May 2022 - Midges, ticks, car rental

Car rental? Where have you tried? Arnold Clark quoting me about £40 - £50 per day for a 11 day hire from Edinburgh Airport (well 3 minute shuttle bus ride). That is half what I am getting quoted for car hire in San Francisco next Sept.

Re: Glen Tilt

Upper Glen Tilt is lovely. I dossed out a short way upstream from the road end, past the footbridge on the last night of a 3 day MTB circuit of the Cairngorms in early May one year. Lovely spot but being in a cleft with steep hills either side I seemed to get cold air dumped on me as the temp droppe...

Re: Isle of Lewis

Probably best on the coasts the moors on Lewis are a bit barren. If you are up in thr north there is a nice coastal walk above sea cliffs going south from Skigersta. When I was there , years age, I saw Peregrine Falcons flying over the cliffs as well as the usual seabirds. If you can arrange transpo...

Re: Best mobile network

EE has signal at the door of the Feshie bothy. Giffgaff not until up the hill with line of sight to KIngussie. In general Giffgaff seems poor in the highlands.

Re: Mugdock Country Park access.

Should a bull be loose in a field with busy footpaths through it? I would imagine it's perfectly legal, assuming it's the farmer's land. Anyone wanting to walk through it does so at their own risk. Perhaps not. "Bulls of recognised dairy breeds (eg Ayrshire, ■■ Friesian, Holstein, Dairy Shorth...

Re: Mugdock Country Park access.

This appears to have been resolved. Up there today with the dogs. The pedestrian gate was open though there was a new looking chain and padlock still on the adjacent post. The five bar main gate had a notice advising people that the land was not part of the park. Seems reasonable warning people that...

Re: Mugdock Country Park access.

[quote="Navvarr"]Which 'Estate' actually own Mugdock?

/[quote]

The park is owned by Stirling Council and managed along with East Dumbartonshire Council. The land in question is, I think, owned by Craigend Farm.

Re: Mugdock Country Park access.

Dumbrock Loch AKA Abies has been a popular swimming spot since at least the 1970s. So while I can sympathise if this summer has attracted a worse than usual crowd the ban hammer isn't the answer. Not new having problems. 2011 litter and vandalism in this newsletter. More policing a better answer tha...

A Cheap Lesson Learned.

I was in the Feshie bothy recently. There was half a dozen of us gabbing in the RH downstairs room. Late evening. Meanwhile a Duke of Edinburgh group of 4 or 5 camped outside were using the other downstairs room to cook. A shout of alarm went up and I went through to see a sheet of flame 3 feet high...

Re: Mugdock Country Park access.

Haven't heard this before and I live locally. Change of ownership? Problems with litter vandalism in this hot summer we have had?

In any case being estate land does not supercede access laws. I'll be up there with the dogs for a walk tomorrow.

Re: Walk Around Loch Katrine

You can walk along the south side of Loch Katrine. Part of it involves a climb up to go through the Bealach Nam Bo as the loch shore is steep cliffs at that point. In fact last night I was talking to a former work colleague who was part of a helicopter crew on a rescue for a walker who got stranded ...

Re: Park the car in Tyndrum

First choice would be the small carpark at the station. You are a legitimate user as you are returning by rail. No charges. First come first sered.

Re: Jetboil - Gas Availability WHW

I was in the pet shop in Milngavie a couple of days ago. Stocking gas beside the front door. If you want to double check - Creature Comforts - 0141 956 1999 PS the Halfords at Bearden Station will not a stock gas. It is just a tyres and exhaust place. Formerly McConnechys, does servicing only. Not u...
