Re: Glenbeg Bothy

Unlucky. According to the book I was the first this month. The other entries back a few months were mainly solo walkers or couples.

Not only meeting a crowd but not getting the offer of a can shocking.

Re: Glenbeg Bothy

I visited it this week. Still in reas0nable nick. The roof looks good. A bit of damp which I suspect is mainly due to the fact there are no gutters so the water runs off the roof then down the walls. Bothy spade. No rubbish. I carried in coal. The open fireplace works well. There is a bit of bogwood...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

Cars per sq km is more relevant, ie the amount of space in your country given over to 4 wheels, rather than how many cars are linked to a person. Cars per sq Km in the highlands is tiny. Here is a satelite pic of a hillwalking hotspot. Care to hazard a guess as to what percetage of the area parked ...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

The road system is part of the commons. Pointless having roads if you can't park at your destination.

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

France , Spain, and Germany have more cars per person than the UK. Not sure Europe is so different. Not that cars don't need managed better in some town centres and tourism hotspots. In general I don't think they are a problem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_territories_by_motor...

Re: The Highlands don't need or want parking charges!

"Every additional motor vehicle parked is a further degradation of the Highland landscape." Really. Are they any worse than the moving ones going past on the road. If there is a road there in the first place then that is the major degradation. A few sq yards of gravel at the roadside to pa...

Re: Camping on summit in winter

Weather is the key. The only time I have slept on the tops in winter was unplanned. I was heading over Beinn Eunach intending to go to a bothy in Glen Kinglas. On my own. Not carrying a tent or bivvy bag. Around Jan/Feb early 1980s. Cloudless blue skies no wind on a very cold day. -!2C in Glasgow I ...

Re: Instead of Moray...but with some of its qualities?

The South West Coast Path? Nice coastal scenery with a contrast between tourist hotpots andquiet bits once you are away from the road.

Re: Jura West Coast Trail

Possibly it is easier to get transport to the north of the island as you arrive. Bus connecting with ferry or hitching rather than get transport from the north end after walking there.

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

VED is nowhere near the full cost of roads maintenance. Most of it comes from general taxation (council tax and national taxes). VED in fact covers the majority of spending on roads. National and local road expenditure in 2021/22 was £11.8 Bn. VED forecast to raise £8Bn next year. So VEd covers aro...

Re: Ben Dronaig Bothy

Nice spot. It was at the bothy that the keeper informed me we were now in lockdown bsack in March 2020. I'd been at Maol-Buidhe bothy the previous night out of phone/radio contact. The drive home was interesting. Hardly saw a car between Shield Bridge and the Great Glen. One or two going the other w...

Mugdock? A cusin of mine who lives in Glasgow. Law abiding member of society. Retired from a career in nursing. Awarded MBE. Phoned me during Covid to get the local info on the best places in Milngavie to park for going walking around Mugdock while avoiding the police. A doctor and his family out fo...

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

Anyone ever heard an update for the two hillwalkers charged with culpable and reckless conduct for going walking at Crianlarich?

Re: Car park closures Glencoe

The other side of the coin being that if the government had said it was fine to go hiking up mountains, you can guarentee tons of people would have been flocking to the honeypot routes and whacked up the risk of transmission in places to a level comparable with other social activities where populat...
