Re: Boot/ shoe fitting

Try Braemar Mountain Sports. They have shops in Ballater and Braemar -last time I had a fitting was before Ballater opened. Had to book as it can take a couple of hours and they have a good returns policy as long as you don’t wear them outside.

Re: West highland way in winter

You are quite right, some of the parts of the route are no place for someone on their own without experience. Very exposed, remote and a long way from help. Short days in December too.
Try to get him on a winter skills course or do it with a group with experience.

Re: A 'What tent?' question?

I have a Tarptent Scarp and Notch Li. Both very good and no complaints on quality. Scarp is very spacious and I have been in some pretty horrible conditions with no issue. Customer service is also very good. Bear in mind that when I got mine the exchange rate was much better and I used stackry to sh...

Re: Wild camping etiquette

Last time I went past the bothy, there were 2 tents pitched at a nice spot on the other side of the river. There was nobody about so they had left the tents to do the hills. Very unobtrusive and a great spot. I camped further down nearer the loch as I was heading out the next day.

Re: Recommendations for next long distance trail

My pick would be Skye. Start north and you get the Trotternish ridge which would be great for camping if the weather is good. I would say that September would be better to avoid midgies. Big Teds suggestions are good too. So many routes you can take round Lairig Ghru-go high or stay lower. Feshie is...

Re: Backup options?

I usually have a backup walk in mind, there can be various reasons why one walk isn't possible even when doing a lower level walk so having an alternative already in mind is handy. Classic example is a walk I did in Glen Tanar, had planned to do one route (not the waymarked walks) but a certain bir...

Re: Cairngorms May 18-27 2033

If you mean my post, the TGO challenge runs from the 12th May and quite a few of the challengers will be around the Cairngorms during your dates.

I think these may have to comply with GDPR rules so should have signs and contact details visible.

Re: Before I buy a Garmin InReach...

The Spot is a different device. I was referring to the garmin subscription which can be provided by another company. I use an annual plan which works for me. I have the unit hitched to my shoulder strap. I use a garmin watch and did have them connected but found it was using too much power from both...

Re: Rucksack Liners, yay or nay?

I use Osprey dry bags, 1 for sleeping bag and nightwear, 1 for spare clothes and one for food (if only going for a couple of nights I don’t bother but if I’m carrying 4 or more days of food it gets untidy). I use a see through plastic rubble sack for a liner. This is mainly to stop the dry bags gett...

Re: Quietiest bothies

We found Lindsay at Feshie most welcoming . Will be interesting ( but sad ) to see the gradual disintegration of the bothy if he is no longer there . He was there last year. As far as I know the MBA removed him from the post but the landowner is happy for him to stay there. I just popped in for lun...

Re: Before I buy a Garmin InReach...

If you take the monthly plan rather than the yearly, you can stop and start it every month. There is a yearly fee to pay. The annual plan you can go from the basic to any other plan every month and after the initial fee there is no more annual fees if you keep the plan running. Horses for courses. O...

Re: Relying on streams for water - planning

I carry 2 smart water bottles which are 750ml ea. Only use one normally but if it looks like being a long stretch without water I fill both. Once I am up higher I don’t use a filter.

Re: Footwear for the West Highland Way

In mid April you could get pretty foul weather and you should expect wet ground and snow. Waterproof mids would be my choice. Get a good boot fitting and maybe go up a size as your feet swell during a long distance walk. I change socks at lunchtime and any hot spots get a compeed straight away altho...
