Re: South side of Loch Mullardoch

Just a thought, but it's probably a similar distance, with better tracks, walking in from the west and Glen Elchaig. That would involve at least nominally more ascent, and the main point against it would likely be much more travel just to get to the start point (Killilan, or perhaps Camas-luinie). I...

Re: Best route for the remote Glen Affric Munro Tops

I did something similar in June 2018, though that was towards the end of several days walking and camping along the entire ridge. I cut across the corrie north of An Socach, picking up water (and a lost Nalgene flask as it happens), then gradually up the east flank of Carn na Con Dhu. From Mullach n...

Re: Altberg Black Brecon

I have a pair of at-least-second-hand Altbergs that in hindsight are probably Brecons, apparently made 2010. Very substantial boots, even by Altberg standards. The leatherwork, lacing etc seems very comparable to Mallerstangs, including for thickness, though the sole differs. I don't know what "...

Re: The Allt Garbhlach crossing.

I can make out a "Path Currently Closed", though not the following lines, or where you're being asked to go (or not go) in the meanwhile.

Re: Bus, walk in, wild camp, Munro routes

As has been said, using public transport gives a lot of scope for linear routes, as well as circuits. I did a few such trips several years back, and went back to doing it this June. Most of these were more than a weekend, but could easily have been shortened: Kingussie to Blair Athol over several da...

Re: July weather

Depending on your transport and plans, Fort William is pretty well placed to reach areas in most directions, if there turn out to be particularly good (or challenging) forecasts locally or in neighbouring areas. I tend to build in at least some flexibility, including higher or lower level options, p...

Re: How many photos do you take on a day out?

Unless it's a very wet or drab, then I'd typically take about 100 per day when in the hills - for example over 1300 during my 2-week trip this year. That's with my camera, not counting other phone pictures (which are much more ephemeral, and most of those just get deleted). Sorting through shots - a...

Re: Glen Affric - high level option ideas?

I was fantastically lucky with a spell of fine weather in June 2018, and enjoyed 3 nights (plus an evening and morning) along these ridges. I found plenty of suitable spots to camp high up, and managed to top up on water by cutting across corries or slopes with burns at several points. There's some ...

Re: Scrambling progression

With Schoolhouse Ridge already mentioned, I'll add that Binnein Mòr also has some easy scrambling options, especially if you're combining it with Binnein Beag beforehand. The north-east ridge of Binnein Mòr is a fine approach, with plenty of scope to scramble up sections, or bypass parts depending h...

Re: Binnein Beag, Sgùrr Èilde Mòr and Binnein Mòr

I'll add another vote for the north-east ridge of Binnein Mor (after Binnein Beag - it's also the shortest route between the two). You should have the chance to eye it up, visibility permitting, but I found it very pleasant easy scrambling, which looked avoidable if necessary. A lot of it is simple ...

Re: A' Bhuidheanach Bheag - Secret Summit?

I've not been over the western top, but had the feeling that it was one of those checked (but not moved). Without any more detailed searching, hillbagging also notes the second summit as being that bit lower: http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/changelog.php?cg=10592 I was "lucky" in having visi...

Re: Corbetts that are finer than the nearby Munro

I'd heartily agree with An Ruadh-stac and The Cobbler (though my preference is to mix-and-match, where time and route allows). And a few more marginal cases (from those I've tried) where the Corbett is perhaps the more interesting hill or viewpoint: Sgurr nan Ceannaicheach over Moruisg (admittedly I...

Re: Fannichs Lodge/Estate

Out of interest, has anybody ever started at Achnasheen, done a loop of the Fannichs and come out at Lochluichart and got the train back to Achnasheen? Looks an interesting way of doing it. I did something like this (actually arriving by train at Lochluichart, then getting a train back south) in Ju...

Re: I know I should know this

I suppose that such information could be significant at higher altitudes, where acclimatisation becomes an issue. But that shouldn't really apply for any Scottish, or Scandinavian uplands, even for those of us coming from the flat southern wastes!

Re: Lairg leacach Bothy

As far as the bothy goes, it was in good condition back in June - but I did get a visit from the resident mice (everything edible was packed safely, and my bag put out of their reach) during the night, so will warn of those.
