Re: Lead mine walk in very wet conditions

Update information: The lower bridge over the Strontian River is closed for safety reasons, seems to be some sort of structural issue, so the return walk down the east side of the river is not possible at present. Otherwise its still all as written above, even the dodgy old bridge up by the lead min...

Re: Closure of Hopes Reservoir car park, East Lothian

Just to add to the saga the local website https://www.oldhamstocksvillage.com/blog/hopes-reservoir-car-park-closure indicates that Scottish Water have an issue with water quality at Hopes Reservoir which requires emergency treatment work and the car park will need to be closed for the duration of th...

Re: Feeling the heat in the Manor Valley

The Manor valley is one of the finest places in the Scottish Borders, scenic, historic, quiet (most of the time!). You clearly had a fine day. For some unknown reason my legs are refusing to tackle these bigger hills these days but the memories remain......

Re: Blair Atholl

What's happening with the Bridge of Tilt Hotel? Stayed there in maybe 2014, 2015, and it was ok for what it was, which was a very cheap Groupon voucher deal. Last I heard there was talk of a full refurb, but that was pre-Covid. I was in Blair Atholl just yesterday doing a walk up Glen Tilt and the ...

Re: Closure of Hopes Reservoir car park, East Lothian

The article in the East Lothian Courier includes a response from a spokesperson for East Lothian Council who indicated that the council will investigate the allegations of ‘blocking’ (of the public road) near the Hopes access. I wonder if anything will come of this? Not that I can see East Lothian C...

Re: Closure of Hopes Reservoir car park, East Lothian

There's a couple of letters in the East Lothian Courier about the parking at Hopes that are worth reading; https://www.eastlothiancourier.com/news/19256240.letter-week-access-issues-hopes-estate/?ref=ar Also vehicle access has also been prevented to another popular East Lothian walking area at Salto...

Re: Going further on the Grey Mares Tail

At the start of your post you mention the ‘well-made tourist path’ and there’s an interesting (well I think so!) connection between when that path was improved and now. As we all know we have just had a serious outdoors lockdown and the last one before this was during the foot and mouth disease outb...

Proper Walking Breeches?

Being of a certain age I like to wear traditional walking breeches and I am struggling to find a new pair with the proper fit. That is, a leg length that stops at my knee. Now there's plenty of plus-4 types where the bottom of the leg ends somewhere around the middle/lower end of ones shin and they ...

Re: West Linton Parking Area Coned Off

Checked again today as I passed through West Linton and the parking area on the side road off Medwyn Road remains coned off. As might be expected folk have taken to parking on the verges of the Medwyn Road.......

West Linton Parking Area Coned Off

Yet another attempt to prevent access......the strip of car parking at the access road off the Medwyn Road that leads to West Linton golf club and onwards to Slipperfield & West Water Resv'r has been coned off to prevent parking. Don't know when this happened as today was my first trip out that ...

Re: Your walking poems.

The late Jim Reid put music to the words of the Violet Jacob poem 'Rohallian' and since first hearing that many years ago it has stuck in my wee brain when out walking, particularly the last two verses. In case you don't know Rohallion is just across the river from Dunkeld. Rohallion  By Violet Jaco...

Re: Closure of Hopes Reservoir car park, East Lothian

Historically, East Lothian landowners have never been exactly welcoming to the general public and this smacks of what one might call the “bad old days”. The Land Reform Act does not cover motorised vehicles but maintaining good access to get to the great outdoors is important for everyone but of cou...
