Re: Food plans and frying pans

!! Trigger warning for cast-iron cookware enthusiasts !! Personally I would keep things simple and avoid large pans and especially frying - as well as being unnecessary weight you will have a disgusting pan full of congealed fat to deal with. In my experience it's not just the fat, the thin metal u...

Re: Bus Price Anomalies

I too have been the victim of unscrupulous bus drivers/bus companies. They're all [ expletive deleted ]. A lot of bus drivers are obese and would look better roasting on a spit over a campfire with an apple jammed in their mouths. Not All Bus Drivers, some are thoroughly decent people. Othe...

Re: Dartmoor camping ban overturned on appeal

... they also own a 16,000 acre estate in Sutherland (which they bought in 2016 for approximately £5m) and then mounted a campaign against gold panners, charging them £10/day and limiting their time panning on their land to two weeks per year. Got to conserve that gold, I suppose. ... I'm not a pan...

So it begins

After years of occasional jaunts around the Cornish coast path and over English hills, we took advantage of a visit to Scotland by sampling my first Scottish mountain. The following is edited from a short report I wrote at the time. We set off from Caithness around 9:00, heading for Ben Hope. The w...

I'm starting to see Caberfeidh's famous fondness for amputation in a new light.

I'm going slightly mhad

Between the majestic bulk of Ben Hope and the high crowns of Ben Loyal, the Kinloch River burbles its way past miles lochs, foothills and bog to empty into the Kyle of Tongue. The picture must be a delight to the few human residents of that well-watered land. It was certainly a delight to this visit...

Re: New maps on Walkhighlands

Thanks for the update, Paul, and for keeping the GPS planner. It looks good to me so far, apart from one bug: I only noticed this this morning so it might be a temporary phenomenon. In a user's walks blog, the top report doesn't display the embedded map, just a grey rectangle with zoom controls (and...

Re: Leather boot shrinkage

Interesting indeed. As a kid I sometimes saw boot stretchers at jumble sales, and it's just occurred to me that I haven't seen one anywhere for a while (or ever used one). Presumably they've become less common as shoes and boots became more synthetic. Nice to see there are still some cobblers doing ...

He could have called the new list "Grahammes" (by analogy to "tonnes", being more metric and slightly bigger than the original).

Re: Well, blow me down!

Indeed, good on you for playing safe! Come to think of it, some deep peat would be just the thing to unwind after a long walk... or am I thinking of deep heat?

Re: Keeping it real

Thanks. It's a good set of hills but a long approach from any direction. I did Tionail later on and found it a lot better going than my route out, so that's a candidate for combining with others in the area. I'd like to go back some time and visit the others but it might be a while now.

Well, blow me down!

A wild, windy but warm trip up and down Càrn an Tionail. Tionail.gpx 20220617_153039.jpg 20220617_155154.jpg The wind was coming from the SW at 40mph (according to the forecast).
