Re: Eriskay - can you get there by public transport with a d

You think your dog is being friendly and coming to say hello. I think he's unhygienic and I'd rather not be licked, sniffed or pawed at thank you very much. That is not really the dog's fault, that is thoughtlessness and/or poor training/socialising/lack of control by the owner. Once when I was on ...

Re: Proof of the Earth's curvature on Ben Klibreck!(?)

Unlike flat esrthers. I do listen to good peer reviewed science. I might have to admit defeat on this one, but I note it says "almost always' distorted, and that the horizon has to be dead centre (therefore there's room to say its theoretically posdible). I'm still puzzled why the horizon in m...

Re: Getting to Kinloch Hourn from Fort William

Glenshiro wrote:You must have used the no. 27 - takes 54 mins via Culloden moor.
The no.11, on the other hand, takes 34 minutes.

Sounds right, it did go round the houses a bit. There was also the 40 minute wait for it to turn up on top of that.

Re: Getting to Kinloch Hourn from Fort William

If you have no flexibility with time or destination and you have the cash to spare, £130 is probably the going rate. I could see why some taxi drivers are happy to take it or leave it as it's not a great road and they could probably make similar money or more running about Fort William for 3 or 4 h...

Re: Getting to Kinloch Hourn from Fort William

At first glance you can get a taxi for £34 this afternoon Al. Horsham to Gatwick 16 miles. £30 Inverness to Inverness Airport 8.9 miles.....but point taken transport affordability, reliability , etc. is crap throughout the UK generally, but when you add in frequency of public transport, (if there i...

Re: Getting to Kinloch Hourn from Fort William

Transport in the highlands is poor and expensive it's about £30 for a 10 mile /15 minute taxi from Inverness to the airport if you're lucky. That is cheap by southern England standards. It once cost me around £70 for a taxi from Gatwick Airport to Horsham which is about 15 miles and mostly on high ...

Re: Getting to Kinloch Hourn from Fort William

I'm surprised some refuse to do the route, I guess a 108 mile round trip is a fair distance, but it is a metalled road all the way, not the Denali Gap. It is a bit difficult to get there it seems if you don't have a car, I got there with a train to Mallaig, a ferry to Inverie and a two day hike camp...

Re: Snowdon via the Watkin path

It is a steep slope and the path is tenuous but I found it ok with care. Having two poles helps a lot with confidence, but with these bouldery lumps that are commonly found on the final ascent to summits, I find it is just a case of route finding and testing the ground carefully if I have to put my ...

Carnedau horseshoe from Ogwen valley

Day 2 and the last opportunity to get in a decent hill day before the weather regressed back to January. I have not climbed the Carnedau for a long time and was interested in doing a route which took in the highest summit, which is the third highest summit south of the highlands. I thought about a r...

Snowdon via the Watkin path

I spent four days in north Wales with the aim of trying out my hill fitness, particularly seeing how I would cope with back-to-back Munro-equivalent hill days in weather that I expect to encounter when I am doing my walking/climbing challenge in the NW highlands in the second half of May. First day ...

Re: Hill training so far in north Wales

I only got two days on the hills in total so missed out on the Glyderau, which is a shame as I would have liked to go up Tryfan's north ridge, Bristly ridge then all the summits, but I can't do that in winter conditions. The top half of the Snowdonia mountains on Thursday were white so was glad I di...

Hill training so far in north Wales

Arrived in Llandudno on Sunday evening with the plan to try back-to-back big hill days up the Snowdonia equivalent of Munros. Managed Snowdon on Monday and the Carneddau today with no ill effects apart from moderate DOMS in my quads. I had mild DOMS this morning but I think the descent back to the A...

Re: Mindless vandalism

Not mindless, just more entitled motorists at the extremist end of the scale who object having to pay for anything.

There can be no more welcoming country to people of colour than the U.K.. We have Rishi Sunak a British Asian Hindu Prime Minister; Humza Yousaf a Muslim First Minister of Scotland of Pakistani heritage; Anas Sarwar Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, a Muslim of Pakistani parentage and now we hav...

Re: The North Face

The point isn't that Caucasians are unwelcoming, more that members of ethnic minorities themselves might feel uncomfortable in the countryside. This is something I don't understand at all. Why would ethnic minorities feel uncomfortable? I am unaware of any notion that going for a recreational walk ...
