Re: Fan y Big demoted from Hewitts

Ah, so that's why we omitted it from a Cribyn / Pen-y-Fan walk in 2008 and it's been a red blob on our Hewitt map ever since . It seems a bit of a shame for what looks like a decent top, but we'll still aim to tick it off sometime.

Re: Berwyns East

Nice report and thanks for the parking tip - often tricky down some of these narrow Welsh lanes. We were on Moel Fferna about two weeks before you in very similar conditions, though just the straightforward route from the A5 (similar to that described by broggy). Reaching the ridge and seeing the ma...

Re: Plant id

Funnily enough, we've just been trying to identify this ourselves, from the photo we took recently on Beinn na Gucaig. P1040002.jpg I thought the leaves looked vaguely willow-like but the red fruit foxed us at first and didn't seem to be pictured in any of our flower books. However we eventually cam...

Re: Walking poles and headtorches

AndyATSmith wrote:Hi all,
What's the purpose of the rubber cover on the tip of a walking pole?

They handy when packing poles in trek bags so the tip doesn't rip the canvas. Also mandatory on the Inca Trail so you don't scratch the ancient stonework - so there's good excuse to go to Peru! :)

Re: My favourite walk

What a lovely circuit! We've never done any walking in the Alps which is a poor state of affairs considering they are almost on our doorstep (although your high mountaineering exploits are certainly beyond us). Especially like the flower pics - good to see a bit of serious botanising on the way. Che...

A.k.a. the philosophical approach to hillwalking? Congrats on getting the Pennine Hewitts 'done'. I'm sure you'll revisit some but hopefully under better conditions than you got on this outing.

Re: 8105 miles to climb a Volcano - Gunung Api, Banda Island

Well, that's what I call off the beaten track! So glad you included the map or else I wouldn't have had a clue - and I though my geography was pretty good. A very nice account.

Re: Along Rawthey Gill to Baugh Fell and Knoutberry Haw.

Hmm - looks familiar! Another excellent report, trailmasher, and I see we share similar suspicions about the Nuttalls description of the route. I particularly like your photos from when you detoured out of Rawthey Gill itself - that was something we didn't get to see. Looking forward t...

Re: Baugh Fell via Rawthey Gill

Thanks for your comments trailmasher and what a bizarre coincidence? :D The blue car was indeed ours - in fact we could see both for most of the time we were descending from the West Tarn. We didn't actually see you two ahead of us at that point but you can't have been that far in front. I remember ...

Baugh Fell via Rawthey Gill

It’s a long time since I’ve written one of these things – well, 3 years to be precise – where has the time gone? A couple of those years were, of necessity, a bit quiet on the walking front so now we’re trying to make up for it a bit. So, we had a few days away in early October and given a good fore...

Re: Calf Top, the new Hewitt

Ha, I'd spotted the Calf Top's uprating on hill-bagging the other day so I wondered which of the usual suspects would post the first report. Thankfully, it looks a very worthy hill from your photos - an excellent report and another possible outing for when we head up that way in three weeks ti...

Re: A fine day out on Thack Moor and Black Fell.

Good report, tm, and nice to hear that the conditions underfoot on this one aren't too bad. Like you, we've already bagged Grey Nag and Tom Smith's Stone from the east with the deliberate intention of doing these as a pair and avoiding the bogfest in between. This route looks perfect for the job. Ch...

Re: Moro Rock, Sequoia National Park, California, USA - 21/1

I knew that name was familiar and, yes, we were there 14 Aug 1999 after doing a not dissimilar lump on the Little Baldy Trail. It's a great viewpoint, though I recall American folks who were there at the same time using the words 'Awesome' and 'Cool' like they were going out of fashion!

Re: Hi, from Msquared10

Hello and welcome to WH - if you're 'near Malvern' based that almost makes you a local! Sounds like you've got plenty of scope for some exotic trip reports in the future.

Re: "Like walking over the whole world"

What a brilliant achievement for the kids (no 'pikes of terror' this time? ) and it certsainly sounds like you crammed a lot into 2 weeks. My wife keeps nagging me to drive her down just that road into Monument Valley so it was interesting to see what else you included on the trip. What time ...
