Re: down jackets

I got my Patagonia 'Pipedown jacket a couple of years ago half-price from 'The Mountain Factor' wwho often have good deals on their gear. It's the best jacket I've ever bought. It's great for chucking on whenever you stop for more than 5 minutes, brilliant for sleeping in on chilly nights to supplem...

Re: Phoenix Phreerunner - best solo tent ever?

I have an old Phoenix too. Great tent; I remember it standing up to some fierce wather in Skye while other tents were being damaged or blown down. In recent years it's been superseded by a Macpac Microlite, which is very similar in design, has bombproof build quality, and goes up in no time. A litt...

Re: Phoenix Phreerunner - best solo tent ever?

The 'Phoenix brand' never ever did rise from the ashes of going down the tubes? But the tent looks really good and reminds me strongly of my current saunders spacepacker tent....simple and practical and if pitched with a bit of care can do a useful job. Have been using my old Phoenix diamond jacket...

Re: Phoenix Phreerunner - best solo tent ever?

What's your favourite solo tent ever? For me it's got to be the Phoenix Phreerunner.... phreerunner.jpg How much was it? And can you sit up in it? I have a jack wolfskin gossammer something or other as it is light and quite cheap. It's really cute, but cheap also means there's not much tent to it (...

Re: Phoenix Phreerunner - best solo tent ever?

Known in our family as 'the coffin' the oriiginal bumph suggested rolling up the inner so you could have friends round for coffee! Re: High altitude snorkeling (taking in Ben Macdui)

Great report, was up not long after you to camp at the Loch side, checked out the Hutchison Hut and it's very impressive - last time I visited it was pretty rank and dingy. You've got to be commended for bravery for going in there though, wetsuit or not. On the subject of fish in mountain lochs, I r...

Re: nostalgia time in the Cairngorms

Great story and photo's, can't beat bit of nostalgia.
I remember Beanfeast, but was more of an aficionado of the 'Vesta' dehydrated meals - especially the 'Beef Madras' flavour. Don't think they were very wholesome but always felt like a gourmet feast in a Bothy.
