Broad Cairn beastie

Spotted this ruthless looking beast hiding in the granite atop Broad Cairn yesterday.

It was very large - almost as big as my little finger, and looked for all the world like one of those strange wasps from south east Asia. Anyone have a clue what it is?

Re: Best sounding Munro Name

Well it just has to be Braigh Coire Chruinn-Bhalgain. Love the meaning too!

But have always had a soft spot for Braeriach.

Re: The Little Things

The fresh, sweet scent of Scots Pine and heather. Most noticeably in Rothiemurchus but occurs in lots of places. For me, that smell is a sensory trigger for a happy day

Re: Cruachan 4

Good to see you made it on to Cruachan after we caught you trying to follow us - thankfully before too much descent! Still don't know how you both had the energy for that, we were knackered after the two! Will have to go back for these two on a better day to see what we missed!

Re: Canada - The Hidden Valley

Possibly some of the best landscapes I've ever seen. I'm actually seething with jealousy

Re: Driesh & Mayar via the Scorrie Ridge

Always enjoy a report of familiar hills but an unfamiliar route, especially when the photographs are as good as this  I've scalped Mayar (twice!) through the usual Corrie Fee route but still haven't made it to Driesh, owing to less enthusiastic companions on both prior visits. Had planned to D...

Re: Britain's widest ranging view?

This topic has come up before but I still can't resist it - it's just really fascinating.

We haven't even managed to discuss whether it was truly physically possible (by some fluke of atmospheric refraction) for someone to have seen Norway from Ben MacDui - can anyone remember that discussion?

Re: Ghostbusters

Spotted an interesting BBC news story where scientists managed to identify certain conditions where the brain becomes disorientated and mistakes yourself for being another presence close by - certainly likely in the conditions on places like the MacDui plateau. http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/v...

Re: Driesh from Glen Prosen

Nice - thanks for the further responses guys, much appreciated! Good to know that the going on my planned return down either the shank of Driesh or Shank of Drumwhallo will be good, though surprised no-one else has taken my planned route up past Cramie and eventually on to the long(ish) ridge that f...

Driesh from Glen Prosen

Time to draw once more upon the wealth of knowledge and experience that is this forum! I've still got a few hills yet to claim in my "home" territory round the mounth and have constructed as many routes as possible to avoid the usual "bag as many in one go" approaches which I oft...

Re: Help with a long, interesting, low level walk

Many thanks for taking the time to share your suggestions guys - very much appreciated! I should have said that the "low-level" requirement was enforced by better half, who's fed up of me always underpromising how gruelling the climb will be, so she stamped her feet and ensured that...

Re: Help with a long, interesting, low level walk

Sgurr, Thanks for the suggestions! Loch Quoich could be a goer, though it's (slightly) beyond my great glen cut-off - self-imposed, but because there's only so far I can drive from and back to Edinburgh in a day without falling asleep!). The Fife coastal path is a good plan B if the weather isn't gr...
